Scarcity sends the sick scrambling for medication

A record 267 drugs were in short supply or completely unavailable in 2011, affecting 550,000 patients nationwide. The shortage includes antibiotics, anesthetics, drugs for cancer treatment and heart conditions, along with intravenous nutrition therapy. Even Valium has been scarce. The problem is continuing affecting people of all ages despite attempts by the federal government to speed up production of crucial drugs. Continue reading

Drug Shortages Blamed In At Least 15 Deaths

A severe drug shortage is endangering patients and forcing hospitals to buy life-saving medications from secondary suppliers at huge markups because they can’t get them any other way. The FDA says the primary cause of the shortages is production shutdowns because of manufacturing problems. So far this year, 210 drugs have been added to the list of drugs in short supply.
